What Is DTF Printing?

DTF (direct-to-film) printing is a modern decoration method where your design is printed onto a special film using water-based inks, covered with an adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the garment. The result is a vibrant, durable, full-colour print that works on almost any fabric and colour.

DTF has rapidly become the leading method for print-on-demand clothing because it combines the full-colour capability of DTG with the durability and fabric versatility that DTG lacks.

How DTF Works

  1. Design preparation — Your artwork is prepared as a high-resolution digital file.
  2. Printing to film — The design is printed onto a PET film using water-based CMYK inks, plus a white ink underbase.
  3. Adhesive powder — A fine adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink.
  4. Curing — The powder is melted and cured into the ink.
  5. Heat pressing — The film is placed on the garment and heat-pressed, transferring the design.
  6. Peeling — The film is peeled away, leaving the print bonded to the fabric.

Advantages of DTF

Full-Colour Capability

DTF reproduces full-colour designs, gradients, photographic elements and fine detail brilliantly — something embroidery and screen printing cannot match without significant cost.

Works on Any Fabric Colour

The white ink underbase means DTF prints are vibrant on both light and dark garments. You don't need different setups for different coloured clothing.

No Minimum Order

Because there is no per-colour setup (unlike screen printing), DTF is economical for single items. This makes it perfect for print-on-demand.

Durability

DTF prints are highly durable. The design is bonded to the fabric with adhesive and withstands regular washing. When garments are washed inside-out at 30–40°C, DTF prints last for the life of the garment.

Soft Hand Feel

Modern DTF prints have a softer, more flexible feel than older transfer methods, though they are slightly more textured than DTG.

DTF vs Other Methods

| Factor | DTF | DTG | Screen Print | Embroidery | |---|---|---|---|---| | Full colour | Yes | Yes | Expensive | No | | Dark fabrics | Yes | Yes | Yes (underbase) | Yes | | Minimum order | None | None | 25+ | Varies | | Setup cost | None | None | Per colour | Digitising | | Durability | High | Good | Very high | Very high | | Best for | POD, full colour | POD, cotton | Bulk, simple | Premium logos |

What DTF Is Best For

  • Print-on-demand clothing stores
  • Full-colour designs and artwork
  • Small runs and one-off prints
  • Designs on both light and dark garments
  • Hoodies, t-shirts, tote bags

What DTF Is Less Suited For

  • Very large bulk runs of simple designs (screen printing is cheaper)
  • Premium corporate logos on polos and fleeces (embroidery is better)
  • All-over sublimation prints on polyester (sublimation is better)

Caring for DTF Prints

  • Wash inside-out at 30–40°C
  • Do not use bleach or harsh detergents
  • Tumble dry on low or hang to dry
  • Do not iron directly on the print
